Travel Bucket List: Michigan {07.09.21}

Hello Friends! I hope this post finds you happy, health and joyful.  In this Tuesday Things post I talked about how I started putting together a bucket list of places I wanted to visit/do in my home state of Michigan.  I've lived here since I was 3 years old and there are still so many things that I have not done and I've decided now is the time to start pursuing them! So today's post is my bucket list of things to do in Michigan.

Michigan Bucket List

1. Whiting Forest Canopy Walk: Walk the nation's longest canopy walk in the Whiting Forest of Dow Gardens.  I have heard of the Dow Gardens and how wonderful they are, but I never realized they had the longest canopy walk through the woods.  once I discovered that they have the longest canopy walk, I knew I had to put it right on my list of places I needed to visit.

2. Visit the Turnip Rock in Port Austin.  This is one of the more tourist-y spots in Michigan, but I do not think I have visited Port Austin and I didn't know the Turnip Rock existed until last week.  This one will require a little more planning as visiting it will be dependent upon renting kayaks and the weather.  I'm hoping to convince one of my friends to go with me over there and do it.  Doesn't it just look so cool?

3. Visit Pictured Rocks in Munising, MI.  This one is up in the Upper Peninsula so we will need to plan a trip up to my in-law's cabin to do this one.  Did you see that a 200-foot front of the cliffs fell into the water in late June? Michigan has some crazy weather with a ton of rain/flooding which impacted a lot of the state.  Check out the video here.

4. Visit Tahquamenon Falls in Newberry Michigan.  I've visited Tahquamenon Falls once in the dead of winter when they were completely frozen over which was absolutely beautiful, but I have not been able to go back since.  I'd really like to hike out to the falls in the summer and see the waterfall.

5. Go to the Tulip Festival in Holland.  This is another one of those things that I've been aware of for several years, but haven't made it a priority to visit.  Every Spring Holland has a festival filled with hundreds of thousands of tulips.  I would love to get out there and check out the Tulip Festival in 2022 when everything has opened back up.  In 2021, the festival still happened but it was at a limited capacity.  While I'm there, I'd also like to visit the Windmill Island Gardens

6. Wine and Chocolate Boat Tour in Frankenmuth.  I've been to Frankenmuth several times for weddings, shopping or just to visit, but I've never done a boat tour while I was there.  When my friend mentioned this a few weeks ago, I was excited at the idea of doing one so I added it to my list of things I'd like to do

7. Shop at the Eastern Market in Detroit. So many people have talked about shopping at the Eastern Market and I have never been.  Even when I was working downtown I still never made my way over there to check things out.  I would really like to go down there this fall to check out the fall florals they have for sale.

8. Stay in this A Frame in Indian River.  A few months ago I was randomly looking for fun places to stay around Michigan for a girls trip (before we landed on something more local) and I came across this A Frame on AirBNB.  I'm debating booking a romantic trip for Justin and I to head up there for our anniversary, but I'm not sure we could swing the time off of work for that.  Still need to talk to him about it.

9. Visit a lavender farm in the summer.  I got this idea from Endless Distances' post about lavender farms in Michigan.  I have gone to visit sunflower fields in the summer, but I have never taken the time to go and visit a lavender farm.  I will have to see if I can squeeze that in sometime this summer.

10. Climb up the Sleeping Bear Dunes.  I visited Traverse City a few times in the last few years with my girlfriends and my mom and it is one of my favorite places to visit in Michigan.  However, I have not done the Sleeping Bear Dunes since I was a teenager and I'd really like to do them again.

Well I think that is everything that I have for now.  I am sure as time goes on I will come across more things that will be added to my Michigan bucket list.  Oh! And when I get the chance to check one of the items off my list I will be sure to update this post with a link to the post about the place I visited.

Question of the Day: What places do you want to visit in your home state? Also, if you're local I'm looking for recommendations for places to add to my list.
