May Book Review {05.31.24}

Hello and happy Friday friends! I hope you had a wonderful week and are looking forward to a fun weekend ahead. We will be doing a few fun things but overall should have a relaxing weekend ahead.  I had a goal in 2024 to read a total of 12 books and I'm excited to say I met that goal!  So now for the remainder of 2024, I am going to just see how many books I can finish for the year.

Today we're talking about the books I read in May.  I finished a total of three books and started three more.

If you want to get any of these books for yourself, click on the picture or the name of the book below and it will take you to Amazon where you can buy the book for yourself.  Heads up: I am an Amazon Associate so if you purchase with my link I could make a small commission.

So without further adieu...here's my May book review.

Book #1 this month was:

Funny Story by Emily Henry

Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra.

Which is how Daphne begins her new story: Stranded in beautiful Waning Bay, Michigan, without friends or family but with a dream job as a children’s librarian (that barely pays the bills), and proposing to be roommates with the only person who could possibly understand her predicament: Petra’s ex, Miles Nowak.
Scruffy and chaotic—with a penchant for taking solace in the sounds of heart break love ballads—Miles is exactly the opposite of practical, buttoned up Daphne, whose coworkers know so little about her they have a running bet that she’s either FBI or in witness protection. The roommates mainly avoid one another, until one day, while drowning their sorrows, they form a tenuous friendship and a plan. If said plan also involves posting deliberately misleading photos of their summer adventures together, well, who could blame them?
But it’s all just for show, of course, because there’s no way Daphne would actually start her new chapter by falling in love with her ex-fiancé’s new fiancée’s ex…right?
This book released in May and I was so excited to read it.  Out of all of Emily Henry's books, I think this is my favorite that I've read.  I believe there is one more that I have not read, but of the one's I've read, this one is my favorite.  My favorite part is it was set in Michigan and that's my home state.  Easy to relate to the location/story when it's essentially my back yard.
Book #2:

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
Enter the world of Throne of Glass with the first book in the #1 bestselling series by Sarah J. Maas.
In a land without magic, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She has no love for the vicious king who rules from his throne of glass, but she has not come to kill him. She has come to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three murderers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she will be released from prison to serve as the King's Champion.
Her name is Celaena Sardothien.
The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. And a princess from a faraway country will befriend her. But something rotten dwells in the castle, and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying mysteriously, one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival-and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.
Thrilling and fierce, Throne of Glass is the first book in the #1 New York Times bestselling series that has captivated readers worldwide.
I am so glad I started this series.  I decided to sign up for a book club at my local Indie book store even though I haven't finished the Court of Thorns and Roses book series.  For being the first book Sarah J. Maas wrote, I am really liking the story so far.  There were a few little nuances that I picked up on, but I am very excited to read the next book for the club in June.

Book #3

Darling Girls by Sally Hepworth
For as long as they can remember, Jessica, Norah, and Alicia have been told how lucky they are. As young girls they were rescued from family tragedies and raised by a loving foster mother, Miss Fairchild, on an idyllic farming estate and given an elusive second chance at a happy family life.
But their childhood wasn’t the fairy tale everyone thinks it was. Miss Fairchild had rules. Miss Fairchild could be unpredictable. And Miss Fairchild was never, ever to be crossed. In a moment of desperation, the three broke away from Miss Fairchild and thought they were free. Even though they never saw her again, she was always somewhere in the shadows of their minds. When a body is discovered under the home they grew up in, the foster sisters find themselves thrust into the spotlight as key witnesses. Or are they prime suspects?
This book left me feeling... weird at the end.  The story itself was very intriguing and I could relate to each of the characters in some way (well most of them).  And I will say that there was quite a twist towards the end of the book.  I think I may pick up her other book to read, but overall this was my least favorite book of the month.

I hope you found something today to read this next month.  Don’t forget…

If you want to stay current on all of the books I’m reading in 2024, THIS PAGE HERE is where I keep the books, authors and reviews each month.

Okay what should I read next? I'm always on the hunt for book recommendations and am fairly open to all stories.

Have a wonderful day,
Jackie
