July Book Review {08.02.24}

Hello and happy Wednesday friends! I hope your August is off to a great start and you are looking forward to the month ahead.
I had a goal in 2024 to read a total of 12 books and I'm excited to say I met that goal!  So now for the remainder of 2024, I am going to just see how many books I can finish for the year.

Today we're talking about the books I read in July.  I finished a total of five books.

If you want to get any of these books for yourself, click on the picture or the name of the book below and it will take you to Amazon where you can buy the book for yourself.  Heads up: I am an Amazon Associate so if you purchase with my link I could make a small commission.

So without further adieu...here's my May book review.

Book #1 this month was:

Dark Fate: The Crown of the Seven Realms Book IIDark Fate: The Crown of the Seven Realms Book II by A.L. Hampton

In the heart-pounding next installment of the Crown of the Seven Realms series, Dani, Rhyland, and his brothers venture into Luminara, the mesmerizing realm of the Fae, on a quest to find the elusive Faerite stone to add to Dani's crown. But their mission is fraught with peril as Azrael relentlessly hunts them down, driven by dark intentions. The sting of Adrian's betrayal still festers, threatening to tear Dani and her vampires apart just when they need unity the most. As Dani battles to control her unchecked power and unravel the mysteries of Luminara, she faces a gauntlet of new enemies and unexpected alliances. Her journey is complicated by the growing power within herself, a force she must master to save the fate of the realms. The secrets of controlling her unchecked abilities may lie in the very heart of Luminara, a realm where time flows differently, and dreams blur with reality. In this action-packed, emotionally charged chapter of the saga, Dani and Rhyland must confront their deepest fears, test the limits of their love, and make the ultimate sacrifice to save each other and the Seven Realms. All the while, they must stay one step ahead of Azrael, who is determined to thwart their quest and plunge the realms into eternal darkness.

I was asked to review this book by the author and I have to say I really loved the story.  If you like vampires, romance, fantasy and adventures, then I would 100% recommend this book to you.  But be aware, it is a level five on the spicy pepper scale.
Book #2:

The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas
Celaena Sardothien is her kingdom's most feared assassin. Though she works for the powerful Assassin's Guild and its scheming master, Arobynn Hamel, she yields to no one and trusts only her fellow killer-for-hire, Sam. But when Arobynn dispatches her on missions that take her from remote islands to hostile deserts, Celaena finds herself acting independently of his wishes and questioning her own allegiance.
If she hopes to escape Arobynn's clutches, Celaena will have to put her faith in her wits and her blade . . . knowing that if she fails, she'll lose not just a chance at freedom but her life.
A prequel to the New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass, this collection of five novellas explores the history of this cunning assassin and her enthralling-and deadly-world.
I know there is a lot of debate in which order to read these books, but my book club did this one third and I am so glad.  It gave me more information about Celaena and her history and filled in some gaps for things where she just made a casual reference.  I cannot wait to see what comes next in the series.

Book #3

Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez
After a wild bet, gourmet grilled-cheese sandwich, and cuddle with a baby goat, Alexis Montgomery has had her world turned upside down. The cause: Daniel Grant, a ridiculously hot carpenter who’s ten years younger than her and as casual as they come—the complete opposite of sophisticated city-girl Alexis. And yet their chemistry is undeniable.
While her ultra-wealthy parents want her to carry on the family legacy of world-renowned surgeons, Alexis doesn’t need glory or fame. She’s fine with being a “mere” ER doctor. And every minute she spends with Daniel and the tight-knit town where he lives, she’s discovering just what’s really important. Yet letting their relationship become anything more than a short-term fling would mean turning her back on her family and giving up the opportunity to help thousands of people.
Bringing Daniel into her world is impossible, and yet she can’t just give up the joy she’s found with him either. With so many differences between them, how can Alexis possibly choose between her world and his?
I accidentally stumbled into this series when I received the third book as part of my Book of the Month (of course I didn't realize it was a third book in a series).  So I picked this book up to read and I loved it.  I think I honestly read it in about 24 hours.  It's a fun read and a cute story.  Highly recommend.
Book #4

The Paris Widow by Kimberly Belle
When Stella met Adam, she thought she had finally found a nice, normal guy—a welcome change from her previous boyfriend and her precarious jetsetter lifestyle with him. But her secure world comes crashing down when Adam goes missing after an explosion in the city square. Unable to reach him, she panics.
As the French police investigate, it’s revealed that Adam was on their radar as a dealer of rare and stolen antiquities with a long roster of criminal clients. Reeling from this news, Stella is determined not to leave Paris until she has the full story. Was Adam a random victim or the target of the explosion? And why is someone following her through the streets of Paris?
An irresistible, fast-paced read set in some of Europe’s most inviting locales, The Paris Widow explores how sinister secrets of the past stay with us—no matter how far we travel.
This was one of my book club books for the month and overall it was an okay read.  It's a shorter book, so that made it a quick read.  I think what turned my off to the book was how almost deliberately dumb the main character was at certain points in the book. If you need a quick read for a plane ride or listen during commute, this would be a good book for you.
Book #5

Heaven Breaker by Sara Wolf
Bravery isn't what you do. It's what you endure.
The duke of the powerful House Hauteclare is the first to die. With my dagger in his back.
He didn’t see it coming. Didn’t anticipate the bastard daughter who was supposed to die with her mother—on his order. He should have left us with the rest of the Station’s starving, commoner rubbish.
Now there’s nothing left. Just icy-white rage and a need to make House Hauteclare pay. Every damn one of them.
Even if it means riding Heavenbreaker—one of the few enormous machines left over from the War—and jousting against the fiercest nobles in the system.
Each win means another one of my enemies dies. And here, in the cold terror of space, the machine and I move as one, intent on destroying each adversary—even if it’s someone I care about. Even if it’s someone I’m falling for.
Only I’m not alone. Not anymore.
Because there’s something in the machine with me. Something horrifying. Something…more.
And it won’t be stopped.
This book received so many mixed reviews I did not know what to expect when I started reading the book, but I will say that overall I really enjoyed the book.  It's definitely not a romantasy book so if you're expecting that, I would probably steer clear. If you like sci-fi books I would definitely check this one out.  I intend to read the second one when it releases next year.

I hope you found something today to read this next month.  Don’t forget…

If you want to stay current on all of the books I’m reading in 2024, THIS PAGE HERE is where I keep the books, authors and reviews each month.

Okay what should I read next? I'm always on the hunt for book recommendations and am fairly open to all stories.

Have a wonderful day,
Jackie
