DIY: Picture Ledge {06.11.2021}

Happy Friday Friends! I hope this post finds you happy and ready for the weekend ahead! Yesterday I shared a little bit about our annual fort sleepover, and today I thought I would share about the picture ledge that we built for our living room.  And by we, I mean Justin.

I have been wanting to put something on this wall since we bought our house in 2016, but have been struggling to come up with something I actually liked for the space so I was super excited when I saw this post on Come Stay a While's Instagram {p.s. if you don't already follow her, I highly recommend checking her out}.  And the icing on the cake was when Justin gave me this artwork he had commissioned from a friend.

So of course I needed place to proudly display the art and the picture ledge was the perfect idea.  I ended up spending some time on Pinterest looking for different ways to build the picture ledge and landed on this tutorial from Ginger Snap Crafts.  Essentially we needed a 1x4, 1x3 and a 1x2 and we happened to have a bunch of 1x4 in the garage leftover from another project from Justin did for his office.

While Justin built the photo ledge, I played around with different layouts and ideas of what types/sizes of frames I'd put up there.  So many different tutorials had a bunch of overlapping photos with different variety and some kept it very simple, so I tried to do a mixture of the frame sizes.  I also tried to mix metals with the frames so that I'd have a bunch of different options that would pull from the artwork.  I originally had a few blue picture frames, but ended up just sticking with a more neutral metal because it felt too busy.

Filling the frames was a bit more of an issue because I had an idea in my head of what I wanted (photos from travels, Justin and I and a fun quote) but wasn't really sure where to start.  To be honest, the empty frames sat up there for quite some time because it was a bit overwhelming getting started.

Justin had mentioned that he liked signs where the word was defined so I picked one relating to home and created that one for the one frame.  I then spent time digging through our photos to find a fun travel related photo and ended up with a picture of the Mackinaw Bridge that I converted to black and white.  I also knew I wanted a least one photo of the two of us, but was stumped on the last frame and ended up spending hours on Pinterest trying to find artwork that would work for the left side.  And like always, Pinterest came through with the last photo from Raindrops on Roses.

I think the thing I am most excited about is the ability to use the picture ledge around the holidays and put some fun holiday-themed decor on the ledge.  I may even sneak in a few little pieces of art for the other holidays as the year goes on, but right now this is the everyday look we have in our living room.  I also threw in a little strand of battery powered twinkle lights that turn on everyday at 3:30 pm for some cute little mood lighting.

If you want to build a picture ledge for yourself, be sure to check out the tutorial from Ginger Snap Crafts or check out Come Stay Awhile's page because they both have some fun and creative ways you can use the picture ledge (for example, use it for books in a kids room).

If you want to check out the picture frames I purchased, the two on the end are Magnolia Homes from Target, the gold frame is by Project 62 from Target and the silver floating frame is also by Project 62 from Target.  I ended up getting a few other floating frames that I really liked that didn't end up on the ledge but elsewhere in the house.

Well that is all for today! Have you done any fun crafts lately around the house that you'd like to share? Be sure to comment below in the comments section!
