August: Book Review {09.04.24}

Hello and happy Friday friends! I hope your August is finishing up and you're ready for the back to school chaos (if you haven't already gone back to school). I had a goal in 2024 to read a total of 12 books and I'm excited to say I met that goal! So now for the remainder of 2024, I am going to just see how many books I can finish for the year.

Today we're talking about the books I read in August. I finished a total of five books.

If you want to get any of these books for yourself, click on the picture or the name of the book below and it will take you to Amazon where you can buy the book for yourself. Heads up: I am an Amazon Associate so if you purchase with my link I could make a small commission.

So without further adieu...here's my August book review.

Book #1 this month was:

They have always scared him in the past—the Rangers, with their dark cloaksand shadowy ways. The villagers believe the Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. And now 15-year-old Will, always small for his age, has been chosen as a Ranger's apprentice. What he doesn't yet realize is that the Rangers are the protectors of the kingdom. Highly trained in the skills of battle and surveillance, they fight the battles before the battles reach the people. And as Will is about to learn, there is a large battle brewing. The exiled Morgarath, Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night, is gathering his forces for an attack on the kingdom. This time, he will not be denied. . . .

This book is a favorite for Justin and I and we listened to it on our road trip down to West Virginia. If you like fantasy that is based more in reality, I would recommend this series for you. It's funny, engaging and so fun.

Book #2:

Same As It Ever Was by Claire Lombardo

Julia Ames, after a youth marked by upheaval and emotional turbulence, has found herself on the placid plateau of mid-life. But Julia has never navigated the world with the equanimity of her current privileged class. Having nearly derailed herself several times, making desperate bids for the kind of connection that always felt inaccessible to her, she finally feels, at age fifty seven, that she has a firm handle on things.

She’s unprepared, though, for what comes next: a surprise announcement from her straight-arrow son, an impending separation from her spikey teenaged daughter, and a seductive resurgence of the past, all of which threaten to draw her back into the patterns that had previously kept her on a razor’s edge.
Same As It Ever Was traverses the rocky terrain of real life, —exploring new avenues of maternal ambivalence, intergenerational friendship, and the happenstantial cause-and-effect that governs us all. Delving even deeper into the nature of relationships—how they grow, change, and sometimes end—Lombardo proves herself a true and definitive cartographer of the human heart and asserts herself among the finest novelists of her generation.

I randomly joined the book club for this book and I have to say it was not my favorite. I would not say it was a book that I would DNF, but it's a book that I left feeling meh after finishing the book. The author's writing style was great, and the story was good but it just was not my genre.

Book #3

Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas

Celaena Sardothien has survived deadly contests and shattering heartbreak, but now she must travel to a new land to confront her darkest truth. That truth could change her life-and her future-forever.

Meanwhile, monstrous forces are gathering on the horizon, intent on enslaving her world. To defeat them, Celaena will need the strength not only to fight the evil that is about to be unleashed but also to harness her inner demons. If she is to win this battle, she must find the courage to face her destiny-and burn brighter than ever before.

The third book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass series continues Celaena's epic journey from woman to warrior.

So far, this is my absolute favorite book in the Throne of Glass series. I feel like we see a lot of grown from Celaena that I am starting to be very drawn to her character. She is a very strong young woman and I am excited to see how she comes into her own as we progress through the rest of the books.

Book #4

The Wren in the Holly Library by K.A. Linde

Can you love the dark when you know what it hides?

Some things aren’t supposed to exist outside of our imagination.

Thirteen years ago, monsters emerged from the shadows and plunged Kierse’s world into a cataclysmic war of near-total destruction. The New York City she knew so well collapsed practically overnight.

In the wake of that carnage, the Monster Treaty was created. A truce...of sorts.

But tonight, Kierse—a gifted and fearless thief—will break that treaty. She’ll enter the Holly Library...not knowing it’s the home of a monster.
He’s charming. Quietly alluring. Terrifying. But he knows talent when he sees it; it’s just a matter of finding her price.

Now she’s locked into a dangerous bargain with a creature unlike any other. She’ll sacrifice her freedom. She’ll offer her skills. Together, they’ll put their own futures at risk.

This was the fantasy pick for the August Book Club and I really enjoyed the story. It has a wide variety of monsters and the main character is very interesting. Originally, I did not think it was a series but it turns out there will be more and I'm excited for them.

Book #5

All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker

1975 is a time of change in America. The Vietnam War is ending. Muhammad Ali is fighting Joe Frazier. And in the smalltown of Monta Clare, Missouri, girls are disappearing.

When the daughter of a wealthy family is targeted, the most unlikely hero emerges—Patch, a local boy, who saves the girl, and, in doing so, leaves heartache in his wake.

Patch and those who love him soon discover that the line between triumph and tragedy has never been finer. And that their search for answers will lead them to truths that could mean losing one another.

This book will stick with me for a very long time and I am 100% certain that it will be a book that I read multiple times because it was just that good. The author does a wonderful job intertwining all of the characters and pushes the story going forward while keeping you on your toes.

Book #6
Runaway Love by Melanie Harlow

Yes, I'm a single dad who needs a nanny for the summer. But hire the stranded runaway bride who shows up on my doorstep in a wedding gown with no references, no skills, and no experience? No one is that desperate. Except within twenty-four hours, down-on-her-luck Veronica Sutton manages to charm my kids, my family, and half the population of Cherry Tree Harbor into believing she's perfect for the job. And for me. It's not that I can't see the appeal-those baby blue eyes? The endless legs? That mouth made for trouble? But I've got enough on my plate, raising two kids on my own and keeping the family business alive. I don't have the time or the inclination to fall for an outspoken city girl. So I should have kept my hands to myself. Holding her in my arms was a big mistake. Even worse? Spending the night together. She ignites a possessive fire in me that I'm finding hard to snuff out. But the most unforgivable? Growing attached to the sound of her laugh, the scent of her skin, and the way her body wraps around mine in the dark. At the end of the summer, she'll be gone. And if I'm not careful, she might run away with my heart.

I don't normally reach for romance novels unless it is written by one specific author but when I saw this one and how cute it is AND the author is coming to town for a meet and greet I had to sign up.  I'm excited to meet her next week.  From a story perspective, it's a fun story and a really great romance to read.  It was the perfect book after my previous read.

I hope you found something today to read this next month. Don’t forget…

If you want to stay current on all of the books I’m reading in 2024, THIS PAGE HERE is where I keep the books, authors and reviews each month.

Okay what should I read next? I'm always on the hunt for book recommendations and am fairly open to all stories.

Have a wonderful day,
Jackie
