2022 House Goals Quarterly Update {04.08.22}

 https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/health/wellness/advice/g985/achievable-new-year-resolutions/

Hello and happy Friday friends! I hope you had a wonderful week and are looking forward to a fun weekend ahead.  Our friends are coming in today for the weekend so we will be spending the weekend doing fun things like going to movies and eating out at our favorite restaurants.  I'm also hoping we can catch up on our show with them because I love watching it with them.

If you've been around since the beginning of the year, then you know I created a goals list for myself this year and will be posting monthly update to keep myself accountable.  Well I also have created a goals list for our house this year.  The idea is to make a concentrated list of things that I wanted to accomplish in our home this year then prioritize them.  Some of the items are small - like organizing closets or purging areas and others are like updating things in the kitchen.  But overall they're things I'd like to get done this year (or even into next year).  To help keep it organized, I've gone room by room and list all of the things I want to accomplish.

Today's post is focusing on a quarterly update of the things so far that we have accomplished around the house.  I'll go room by room like the initial post and share what we have/have not been able to accomplish.

Living Room

In 2021, we made a few small updates to the living room that brought it closer to what I was envisioning for the space.  Justin made me a picture ledge on which I store a bunch of fun photos.  I love it and love that I can make changes to the pictures for holidays and seasons.  Such a fun addition to our living room.

In 2022, I'd really like to do the following things:

I have a vision of adding built in shelves in our living room to add more storage and make the space feel more sophisticated.

Guess what! We added built in shelves in our living room! We went to IKEA and bought some of their Besta shelving and updated it to secure it to the wall.  I am so happy with how the space turned out and love all of the extra storage we now have in that space.  Plus, it freed up some other space in there too.  We also painted the wall that the shelves are to really make the space pop.

I'd also like to frame out the windows like we did in our bedrooms.
I'm happy to also share that we framed out the windows and painted the framing in the small windows so that it was no longer beige.  The windows also received blinds instead of black out curtains and I am so happy we did that.  It makes the space feel so much more open and lets in a lot more light than before.

Check out the before and after photos below.  You can't see the window where we added blinds, but it's on the left side of the room.

Kitchen/Breakfast Nook/Dining Room

The big heavy hitter is to get the back splash put up.
I know exactly what back splash we want for our kitchen, but we have not been able to start this process because there is an issue with our window in the kitchen.  The framing is a bit warped and we are not able to open the window.  Given that it's the only window in our kitchen, we need to get this fixed.  I am happy to share that I've got a warranty claim filed with the window company, so right now we're in the waiting process for them to come and look at and potentially fix the windows in the house {since it's more than just the kitchen window}.

In the kitchen and dining room we need to frame out the windows just like the windows in the living room.  I'm not 100% certain if we will frame out the kitchen window or not, but I'm leaning towards yes.  We also need to add some blinds in that window too.
I have decided that we would, in fact, be framing out the window.  The framing will match the same framing we did in the living room in order to keep it consistent.  Thankfully the sliding door in the kitchen is already framed so all we would need to do is frame out the window.  However, we are still unable to do this until the window is fixed.  The other thing is I'd like to add a ledge to the window to allow me to store some things on the window ledge versus behind the sink on the counter.  I have already figured out where I need to order the ledge and have already figured out to what I want, but I cannot have that installed until we get the window fixed.

In the breakfast nook and dining room we have different rugs and I'd really like to replace them {and the runner in the hallway} to be all matching rugs.
This is one of those things that I keep going back and forth on.  I found a rug that I really like from Ruggable and it would come in the correct sizes for the dining room, hallway and the breakfast nook. The only issue is they are a bit expensive and I'm trying to justify the expense.  The one thing I really like about Ruggable is I can easily wash those rugs so when the kitties have accidents it will be easy to just wash them instead of spending the time cleaning them by hand.

The last thing I'd like to do in the kitchen area is to just go through the cabinets and purge things we no longer need/use.
I started going through a few cabinets and was able to purge a few things.  I still want to go through more cabinets and trash/donate items we no longer need.

Garage

Tossing/Donating/Selling and Organizing
We did not do any work in the garage since the beginning of the year because, let's be honest, it's REALLY cold out.  I always knew that this project would be something that we would wait until Spring/Summer/Fall.  I'm really aiming toward Spring but it will depend on our schedules.

Add blinds and baseboards
Like I said above, this project hasn't been started yet but these will depend on us getting the garage cleaned out and organized.  I know what type of blinds I want and I know what type of baseboards, I just need to get around to ordering them so they're ready once we're ready to put them up.

Bedrooms/Laundry Room

I'd like to move my bike from our bedroom to the guest bedroom
I moved the bike back in February and it is amazing how much more open our bedroom feels without my bike in that space.  It's also nice because I can workout whenever I want without disrupting Justin's sleep.

Get some fresh plants to spruce up the spaces
I'm happy to share that I was able to complete this one too! I bought a few snake plants from IKEA and added them to our bedroom, my office and in the living room.  I love having real plants that add a pop of color to the space and I love that snake plants are supposed to add a ton of oxygen to our home.

Laundry Room
I will be honest and say that I have not done anything in the laundry room.  I'm really struggling with the space and I'm just not sure what I want to do in there.  I'm thinking I just need to pull everything out and give it a deep clean then go from there.  I my eye on a few different utility tubs, but it will really depend on how wide they are as we are very limited on space between the washer/dryer and Litter Robot.

Basement

Finish cleaning the basement
We have not had time to get around to finishing organizing the space in the basement.  We didn't have a lot on our agenda, but we also just were not motivated.  It's a bit difficult because it's a space we do not access frequently.

Put up blinds and camera
This also has not been done yet.  I know what camera I want to order and which blinds we would use, but we just haven't gotten around to doing it.

Outside

Add a deck
Guess what! In March we got a quote for a deck and put a deposit down on building a deck this summer.  I am so excited to have a nice outside space where I can work or even just relax after the work day.

Address the landscaping
Last week we had a landscaper out to look at our yard and give us a few ideas of things we can do to help improve our yard.  He gave us a quote and we just need to discuss what we need to do next to get the house going forward.  I need to walk through the quote with Justin so we can decide if we are going to go ahead and schedule the landscaping finishing too.

Miscellaneous

In 2022, we need to contact our original window installers because they are bowing, cracking and generally not working very well.
I already mentioned this above, but I contacted them earlier in March to submit a warranty claim.  Right now we are just waiting for them to reach out and discuss the next steps on getting the windows fixed.  This really is the next biggest project as it is putting our kitchen work on hold.

This is a big stretch goal and likely won't happen in 2022, but I'd really like to replace the carpeting in our house.
I'm not sure if this will be happening in 2022.  I will likely hire out a cleaning company to clean our carpeting and then next year we will look to get our carpets replaced.  The biggest expense this year will be our deck.

Well that is my recap of our house goals quarterly update.  The next time around, I will be sharing what we were able to accomplish between now and the end of June.

If you made it this far, thanks for sticking around. I'm excited to see what 2022 will bring for us and for you all!
